The ophthalmology services are centred at Queen Marys Hospital (outpatients, theatres, emergency referrals) and Princess Royal University Hospital (outpatients and day cases) with additional outpatient clinics at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Darent Valley Hospital at Dartford. The service is staffed by 16 Consultants who have subspecialty interests of oculoplastics, external eye and corneal disorders, glaucoma, uveitis, medical retina, vitreo-retinal surgery and ocular motility and paediatric ophthalmology.
The department also has 7 Associate Specialists, 5 Speciality Doctors, 2 Clinical Assistants and 6 Trainees. It is well supported by nursing and orthoptic staff, has the services of optometrists and medical photographers and is extremely well equipped.
The successful applicant with an interest in glaucoma will contribute to the provision and development of all aspects of the SLHT glaucoma service (including working closely with community-based colleagues) and will be based at the QMS site, with commitments at PRUH and QEW. The successful applicant with an interest in primary care and anterior segment ophthalmology will be responsible for setting up primary care clinics and contributing to the running of the emergency service at QMS, with an opportunity to establish an anterior segment practice, including performing modern, lamellar corneal surgery.
Both posts will include some commitment to the general ophthalmic services (eg cataract surgery) and an on-call rota on a 1 in 14.5 basis with prospective cover.
